“YOU’RE LATE,” Deb reproached when Josie finally showed up at the harborside café where they’d agreed to meet for brunch that morning.

Josie dragged out a chair and sat down. “Only fifteen minutes.” They were lucky she remembered to come at all. Ever since Callum left her shortly after ten-thirty, she’d been hard pressed to keep her mind on the present, and not on tonight.

Sex in a public place. What had she gotten herself into here?

“Well, come on, Josie,” Lisa piped up impatiently. “We’ve been dying to know all about last night. You know, the reunion and everything.”

“Yes, did you or did you not end up in bed with Angus?” Deb demanded to know.

“Huh?” Josie’s thoughts were so full of Callum—and the night ahead—she’d forgotten momentarily that her roommates still believed she’d gone to the reunion with Angus.

“Yes, forget the reunion,” Lisa agreed. “What we really want to know is all about the sex afterward.”

The sex afterward. Oh dear, if only they knew…

But they weren’t going to. Never in a million years. This was her private life, her private fling and yes, her private fantasies, about to come true. She wasn’t going to spoil any of it by listening to Deb and Lisa’s shock-horror reactions, followed by their do-you-really-think-you-should advice.

Josie was opening her mouth to launch into the story she’d already settled on—where Angus’s departure from her life happened after he brought her home last night—when the sight of a smiling Brenda walking toward their table shocked her into further silence.

Panic was an understatement. Josie contemplated jumping up and dragging Brenda off to one side, but already it was too late.

“Fancy seeing you here this morning!” Brenda exclaimed as she stopped opposite Josie. “We haven’t seen each other in five years and now it’s been twice, in twenty-four hours. Look, I won’t interrupt your lunch with your friends. I just wanted to say how lovely you looked last night and that I thought your Callum was everything you said he was.”

Josie slid surreptitious eyes over at her roommates who’d picked up on the strange name and were exchanging frowns and faces. Deb mouthed Callum to Lisa and Lisa made a shrugging, eyebrow-raised gesture.

Fortunately, Brenda didn’t draw breath long enough to let anyone get a word in.

“Could you pass a message on to Callum for me?” she rattled on. “Just say I’m going to take his advice and go blond. Amber thinks I’m crazy but I don’t really care what she thinks. Frankly, I’m not going to see much of Amber anymore. She’s not the person I thought she was. Do you know I found out she deliberately sent you an invitation without a note on it that you should bring it with you? I couldn’t believe she’d stoop so low, just to embarrass you. Fancy being so petty and mean. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I had nothing to do with it.”

“I’m glad,” Josie said. “Thanks for telling me.” She’d never really disliked Brenda. She’d just pitied her. Perhaps Callum had felt the same way.
